Pierre Soulages is a French artist who is best known for his paintings of large black canvases. He was born in Rodez, France in 1919, and he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After serving in the French Army during World War II, he returned to Paris and continued his studies. In the 1950s, he began to experiment with painting on black canvases, and this quickly became his signature style. His work has been exhibited all over the world, and he has been awarded numerous prestigious prizes. In 2019, he was named a Commandeur of the Legion of Honor, France's highest honor. Pierre Soulages is one of the most important artists of our time, and his work has had a profound impact on the course of modern art.
