Ogata Korin (1658-1716) was a Japanese artist who is best known for his work in the Rinpa school of painting. His most famous work, "Byakuya Zuihitsu," is a screen painting that depicts a blue and white landscape. Korin was born in Kyoto and began his career as a painter in the workshop of Tawaraya Sotatsu. He later studied under the artist Ogata Kousetsu, from whom he derived his surname. In 1688, Korin established his own studio, and he soon became one of the most sought-after artists in Japan. He travelled widely throughout the country, painting such diverse subjects as flowers, birds, and landscapes. In addition to his work as a painter, Korin also produced a number of lacquerware designs and wrote several treatises on art and aesthetics. He died in 1716 at the age of 58.
